Everyone is looking for something to make us be healthier, live longer, look better, keep the brain sharp, a magic pill and the proverbial fountain of youth.

There are a lot of pills and procedures out there. Most of them used to treat some infirmity we already have. They cost money and produce side effects that need their own pills to fix and we are now on the treadmill called the Americans Health Care System. A system that only works when we are sick, and not very well at that. Let me turn you on to something that, if you are willing to put out a little effort, will minimize your need for pills and the American healthcare system.

What is the magic bullet??? EXERCISE!!

It will keep your medical costs lower, help you sleep better at night, slow the aging process and improve your mood. An investment in exercise is preventive medicine. What a great idea!!

There are very good studies shown that active people have lower blood pressure, stroke rates, heart attack rates, a decrease of 13 types of cancer including breast, ovarian and colon. We are able to prevent and treat type 2 diabetes also. Mentally exercise has been shown to lower rates of anxiety, depression and memory loss.

Americans spend 3 trillion dollars on healthcare every year with most going toward disease treatment. With all that money spent, the US ranks 43 among all nations in longevity and population health.

There seem to be a lot of reasons to consider exercise on a day to day basis. What are the negatives? Short answer- It takes some effort on your part! The World Health Organization advise that most adults need 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity each week and twice weekly muscle strengthening sessions.

For us boomers and seniors let’s talk about how exercise keeps us young or in the very least keeps us from dying prematurely.

People who exercise regularly had few heart attacks and strokes and lived longer than those who spent most of their time on the couch. It also slows the progression of degenerative brain diseases like Alzheimer’s. Moderate physical activity increases the flow of blood to the brain which increases oxygen levels and removes toxic compounds that kills brain cells. Exercise reduces inflammation which in turn reduces protein plaques in the brain, a contributor to Alzheimer’s. It also causes the release of feel-good endorphins and helps lubricate our joints. Exercise is an anti-aging strategy with a lot of science to support it.

Anyone who watches TV has seen the ads from the large pharmaceuticals offering a wonder drug that has some major benefit but then goes on to list all the side effects. Everything from diarrhea to death!!!Suppose you were offered something that had a ton of benefits and very few side effects! Something that could increase your life expectancy as well as the quality of that life?? Would you go for it? Of course you would! Only the most compulsive hypochondriac would refuse. There is a wonder drug. It’s not in pill form and it involves a little effort on your part. ITS EXERCISE!

Healthcare in the US has very little to do with health. What we have is sick care! We spend more money treating the diseases of an unhealthy population after the disease has set in instead of investing in prevention to avoid it in the first place.

Several diseases respond strongly to exercise, including blood pressure, stroke rates, heart attack risk, 13 types of cancer (including breast, ovarian and colon) and type 2 diabetes. Numerous studies have shown lower rates of anxiety, depression and memory loss with exercise.

Exercise is a preventive medicine that can decrease the 3 trillion dollars the US spends every year treating these diseases.

With all the money now being spent on sick care the US ranks 43rd among all nations in longevity and health. Exercise is faster, safer and more effective than most drugs on the market and can increase your life expectancy by 5 years.

Let’s get back to basics to prevent disease. Increase your dose of exercise, get moving, keep moving and DON’T STOP.

It may be caused by bad bacteria growing on the very back of your tongue. Here are the steps to take to treat it.

Use Hibiclens 4% antiseptic skin cleanser, which is available at your drugstore

Place 2-4 drops on your toothbrush

Reach the toothbrush as far back on your tongue as possible

Rinse, because it will taste yucky!

Most people want to live long lives. We also want to be in good health for the majority of our lives. Health expert Dr Chip Whitney calls this, “Making your health-span match your life-span.”

Here are our tips for a healthy life:

Start with a better night’s sleep

Sleep 6-8 hours per night. If you have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep, do an online search for “Sleep Hygiene Tips”. These are simple tweaks you can make to your routine that can make a big difference in how you feel.

Get screened for sleep apnea.

If you snore, be kind to your bed partner and try an appliance to help stop snoring. At Broadway Dental, we can make you a mouth appliance to help stop snoring, or to treat sleep apnea.


Get 22 minutes of cardio exercise a day – that’s 150 minutes per week. Exercise helps protect your blood vessels from damaging inflammation.

According to a study from Harvard University, adults over 30 can lose 3-5% of their muscle mass every ten years. If a person weighs 150 pounds, they may lose 7 pounds of muscle every 10 years! Fight back with regular weight-bearing exercises.

Helpful Foods and Supplements

Eat wild Alaskan salmon 2-3 times a week – or take a daily fish oil supplement with 1000 mg EPA.

To see if your fish oil is of good quality, poke a capsule with a pin squeeze out some of the oil to taste. If it tastes fishy, that is good sign. If it tastes rancid, you have a low-quality or damaged supplement.

Eat your vitamin A, don’t get high doses in a vitamin supplement. Yellow, orange, green veggies have this important nutrient.

Eat dark chocolate every day! Enjoy 7-10 grams of 72% cacao for healthful antioxidants. This is about 1 square for most bars.

Probiotics are bacteria that are friendly to our bodies. Taking a quality probiotic capsule daily has been found to calm auto-immune diseases, help with digestion issues, and help you absorb the nutrients from your food better. Probiotics may also reduce “brain fog” and depression.

Look for probiotic foods and drinks. Some popular probiotic foods include yogurt, non-pasteurized sauerkraut, and kimchi. For a good-for-you drink, try kombucha and kefir.

Let’s talk about bribing kids to get them to do what we want. I do this and I am not ashamed to tell you, their pediatrician, or their grandmas.

My boys are nine and six years old now. I can get them to brush, use their flossers and tongue scrapers every day, but they are bribed to do so, and have been for years.

Here is how it works. I give them candy after they brush and “flosser” their teeth. Yes, candy. But not just any candy, what we refer to as “brushing candy” is actually good for their teeth, and tasty, so my boys want to earn them by cleaning well.

All I have to say is, “After you brush and use your flossers and scrapers, come and get your brushing candies.” Done. I check to make sure they cleaned all the plaque off their teeth well, and they jump for joy to get their candies. So simple; and they never whine.
